The NDIS provides funding to eligible people with disability to gain more time with family and friends, greater independence and an improved quality of life.
Short Term Accommodation including Respite Care
The NDIS recognise that from time-to-time people may require temporary supports that are different from their usual arrangements. Short Term Accommodation, including respite, is funding for support and accommodation for a short time away from the usual home.
The NDIS will fund up to 28 days of Short Term Accommodation respite care per year. Funding can be used flexibly. For example, a person might want to use it for 14 days at a time, or for one weekend. It’s often funded when a person’s usual carers are not available, or for a person to try new things.
Short Term Accommodation funding can be used for respite to support a person with disability and their carer/s. This gives the carer/s a short break from their caring role. Sometimes a short stay away from home:
- gives a person the chance to try new things
- can be a place to make new friends
- develop new skills and build capacity for independence
- may help to maintain the current living situation by giving informal caring supports a break.
A period of Short Term Accommodation or respite care aims to support ongoing caring arrangements between people with disabilities and their carer/s. It allows the opportunity for the person to be supported by someone else, whilst providing their carer/s with short term breaks from their usual caring responsibilities.
The NDIS does not allow Short Term Accommodation funding to be spent on holiday packages or holiday accommodation.
Short Term Accommodation or respite care can be provided at the support ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 if there is a second person to share supports with while at Reef Retreat NQ, and the 1:2 ratio is appropriate for the person.
The Beachside Day Program can be provided at the support ratio of 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3 depending on the level of assistance the person will require during their attendance to the program.
Supported Stays
The NDIS recognises that people with disability have life goals. If a person has CORE funding available in their NDIS plan, this can be used flexibly to achieve NDIS stated goals such as:
- Travel away from home
- Participate in the community
- Trying new things
- Meet new people
- Make new friends
- Develop independence
- Develop social skills
- Engage in capacity building skills
A supported stay means the person pays for the Reef Retreat NQ accommodation costs and the NDIS will fund the support services they require to stay at Reef Retreat NQ to assist or supervise with any daily living activities and personal care needs.
Supported stays for individuals can be provided at the support ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 if there is a second person to share supports with while at Reef Retreat NQ, and the 1:2 ratio is appropriate for the person.
